Let’s take a look at the string of the wooden
toy in the up and down positions:

Squeezing
the toy makes the string straighten out, leaving only
the X
in the middle, and forcing the little guy up! Releasing
it go lets the figure drop down. Now the string has
three X’s.
When
you make your own, it’s easier to use only one arm.
Then, the string can go straight across when the character
is up, and make 2 X’s
when it drops down.
