Finding an error in wiring using a circuit diagram

Using a circuit diagram to troubleshoot a circuit

  1. Create a diagram of the circuit you want to make.

  2. Make the circuit that is shown in the diagram.

  3. Compare the diagram to the circuit. Make sure:

    • every line on the diagram corresponds to a connection in the real circuit;
    • every symbol in the diagram corresponds to the real part in the circuit; and
    • nothing is in the circuit that isn’t in the diagram.
  4. If the circuit still doesn’t work, there are three possibilities:

    • The diagram was incorrect;
    • One of the connections in the circuit is bad (most likely); or
    • One of the components is bad.
